ARAVNIC: UNTITLED EP1990

The first time I set foot in a recording studio was when Pat Neary opened the doors to WestOne Studios in Galways hinterland. Aravinc had raised enough money to cut a demo tape. We spent 3 highly charged days recording and mixing and ended up with a 5 track EP of original songs penned for the most part by Jimmy Smith our guitarist. Pat held his cool and kept us all going in the small hours. It was a great experience that subsequently led to the break up of the band :)

JINX EP1997

Jinx headed to dublins DIT sound engineering studios to record a demo in the summer of 1997. The comet Hale-Bopp was visible in the sky and it looked like we had good fortune on our side. Unfortunately we suffered mechanical breakdown and some members of the band got food poisoning but other than that it was a successful outing. We put down 4 tracks for what was to be the only recording Jinx would ever make.

MIDDLE PILLAR EP1999

Recorded in Jon Richards studio in GBFM this was our first official EP. It had a limitied print run (only about 400 copies) but was well received by all who heard it. A copy of the EP was sent to the USA and succeeded in securing a recording contract with the independant New York label Liquid Fusion. As a result of a combination of lack of funds and limitied internet our ability to capitalise on this relationship was hindered and the contract expired without any headway.

During this time Charis recorded several EPs which were then copied to Cassette Tape the cheapest and most popular format at the time. Although I no longer have any copies myself I am told that they are out there under beds and in the backs of wardrobes fighting oxidation and keeping the memories safe.

Much of the kudos for making these recordings happen must go to the venerable Jon Richards who gave his time and studio space to many a weary traveling musician. Some unknown and some not. FInd out more about Jon here

DESERT DARK SKY2001

Desert Dark Sky was recorded in a house in Ballindooley Co Galway by Jon Hicks. We spent the best part of 8 days in session in an old farmhouse where we had divided up the rooms into seperate studio boothes. During this recording session we seemed to subsist mainly on fruit smoothies being dished out by John's girlfriend. Smoothies and coffee kept us running. Mixing was done in Open Ear Productions and we went on to print abround a thousand copies of this 8 track album.

WINTERFLOWER2003

Following a trip to the USA Charis decided to record their second album. We went to Killenaur castle in Co Tipperary where we spent 2 weeks writing and recording whilst taking int he beautiful surrounds of the estate. The main recording room was created in the Millenium Room and engineered by Bruno Staehelin. WinterFlower was to be the last recording made by this line up.

THE BEHOLDER (2007)2007

The Beholder is a light-hearted contemplation of one man's perception of beauty. Adam - a City failure now living on Hampstead Heath - shares the company of the world's greatest philosophical minds as he struggles to grasp the troublesome relationship between our hearts and eyes, and the seemingly inexplicable decisions people make when looking for love. Our scholar's conclusions are thrown into disarray upon the arrival of a mysterious new muse, and it soon becomes apparent that mother knows best..
